In 5 cases of pulmonary apical tumors associated with Pancoast¢¥s syndrome, 3 cases were malignant tumor: 2 cases were squamous cell carcinoma which was ended with exploratory thoracotomy, and one case was adenocarcinoma which was able to resect and has no recurrence yet to the present time, 3 years after operation.
The resectable 2 cases among 5 cases were benign tumor: one case was a cystic teratoma containing 900 §¦. of fluid and the other was ganglioneurofibroma arising from the level of the second thoracic vertebra. These two benign tumors were able to resect and symptoms were disappeared dramatically after operation.
One case of unresectable squamous cell carcinoma was misdiagnosed as apical tuberculosis, and a resectable case of adenocarcinoma was misdiagnosed as rheumatic polyarthritis.
At the beginning of the disesses, all the 5 cases had treated medically under the diagnosis of neuralgia of shoulder region for a considerable period of time.
